Here is a neat way to recycle a jar. It also is a fun and easy gift to make. I gave out several of these as Christmas gifts and I filled them with a mixture of M&Ms and Chex Party mix. I also gave one to a pet owner filled with doggie treats. I gave one friend a jar filled with my husband's homemade salsa. To save time, pick up candy or treats at the store to put in the jar.
To make you will need:
- a jar
- Paper
- Paint (optional to paint lid)
- Mod Podge (optional, if you paint lid use this as top coat over paint on lid).
- brown ink
- a punch
- a Sepia photo
- twine
- brown stamping ink
- brown pen
- scissors
- glue
- pen
- small pre-made inner label (or make one yourself). Use this to write on.
To make:
- Paint lid, after it is dry "ink" around edges for antique look, when dry coat with Mod Podge.
- Cut two paper strips long enough to fit around jar. Make one wider than the other. Use these as the label, with the larger in back, and smaller centered over the back. Your other option is to use a ribbon as the thinner strip. Ink the edges of paper for antique look. Adhere to one another then wrap around jar. Make sure it is snug and glue together. Add smaller label on top of this. (For some of the jars I used a photo for the label, like the photo of my mother holding me when I was a toddler.)
- Make a tag. You can use Sepia photos here too. I like to use old family photos when I give this gift to family members. Ink edges of photo and paste to a slightly larger piece of paper. Punch small hole for twine.
- Wrap twine around jar near lid, and add tag.
- You can also wrap more twine around middle of jar if you wish.
- Cut out a circle of paper just slightly smaller than lid to cover top of lid. Ink edges and attach with glue.
- Fill with a treat and give as gift.
